The new valuing of tradition as the cause of disillusionment with modernity
Abstract
The elimination of pre-modern institutions and views has been generally considered as essential and therefore as positive for the purpose of accelerating the historical evolution of any society and of bringing material progress. The traditional order has been supposed to be something basically negative. However, the modernization process includes destructive factors, which are now being increasingly perceived in a more realistic manner. Some pre-modern elements deserve a better fate in the collective intellectual awareness, such as religion (as a source of meaning and comfort), the classical view of art and literature (an aesthetics based on beauty) and non-quantitative values.
Key words: tradition, pre-modern society, modernity, aspects to be preserved, destructiveness.Downloads
