Abstract

This article offers a discussion of the concept of leisure experience in the context of contemporary societies, which are shaped by consumerism and the acceleration of everyday life. We present the Ibero-American and Anglo-Saxon lines of research on this concept and propose a reflection based on theoretical and epistemological principles from Cultural Studies. Based on an ethnographic study of the community initiative Aveiro em Transição, we analyse the idea of leisure through its environmental dimension. The contributions of this study include the problematisation of the concept of leisure experience in the light of environmentally sustainable lifestyles, with more meaning for the subjects, and the development of the sense of community. The article also contributes to an understanding of how experience and subjectivation are central themes in leisure studies.
