Mozambican society is based on religious diversity to the point of being classified as a multi-religious society. This article deals with religion in Mozambique with the aim of panoramically presenting the three historical periods of the implantation of the three religions with the largest contingent. It is intended to explain relevant aspects of the socio-religious context in the process of formation of the Mozambican nation and society. Social aspects related to the three major religious matrices in force in the country are presented: Christian, Islamic and Traditional African Religion (RTA). To this end, it is questioned how these religious matrices have contributed to the formation of Mozambican society. Methodologically, it is a bibliographical and documentary research, using procedural analysis and historical hermeneutics together with theoretical basis of the sociology of religion, in an analytical perspective of emancipatory knowledge. As a result, we can say that religions are fundamental in terms of establishing the foundations or religious genesis that stand out in the cultural formation, humanization, socialization of Mozambicans, a means of interaction between individuals and society and in the development of Mozambicans’ religiosity.
